JS and I did a quick overnight ride to Rocky Point/Puerto Peñasco, a touristy beach destination an easy 4 hour ride from Tucson. We stayed at Posada La Roca ("The Rock") which has exactly two claims to fame:
1) It is the first structure built in PP.
2) Al Capone stayed here while scouting for a suitable port to bring bootleg liquor into Prohibition-era USA.The main hallway. You can see why the hotel is called "The Rock". The main walls are hand-hewn local rock, and the masonry walls between the rooms prevent any stray noise from interrupting your sleep. (Although the main street can be noisy until late.) Throughout the hotel are antique knick-knacks, stained glass skylights and live plants.
The hotel is in the "old port" part of the town. We saw many pale faces, but at least half of the tourists seemed to be Mexican families.
Several of the lunch spots offer nice views of the bay. To the northwest are the high rise resorts. We had tasty fish tacos and watched the sea birds swoop over the water, then land and bicker among themselves. Several folks came by offering to sell us candy, toys and jewelry.
